On 21/07/2020, Apple Inc. announced a commitment to become 100 percent carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030. The company stated that this pledge expanded beyond its corporate operations, which had already achieved carbon neutrality in April 2020. Apple said the new target would extend climate efforts to include third party manufacturing partners and the full lifetime emissions of devices, including materials, production, transportation, customer use, and recycling. Apple outlined a plan to reduce emissions by shifting suppliers to renewable energy, increasing use of recycled materials, improving product energy efficiency, and investing in carbon removal projects. The company said it would work with suppliers worldwide to transition to renewable electricity and implement efficiency improvements. Apple also introduced new environmental initiatives, including expanding low carbon product design and increasing recycled content in components such as aluminum, rare earth elements, and tin. The company stated that remaining emissions would be addressed through verified carbon removal programs. Apple reported that more than 70 suppliers had already committed to using 100 percent renewable energy for Apple production at the time of the announcement. The company also introduced a climate roadmap describing steps to reduce emissions across the entire product lifecycle. Apple said the goal meant that every Apple device sold by 2030 would have a net zero climate impact, reflecting reductions in both direct operations and broader supply chain emissions.
