The Helot Revolt in Sparta was a critical event that highlighted the tensions between the Spartan ruling class and the Helots, who were essentially serfs bound to the land. The Helots, primarily descendants of the Messenian population, had been subjugated by the Spartans and forced into agricultural labor. Over time, their resentment grew, leading to a revolt that posed a significant threat to Spartan stability. In response to the uprising, the Spartans called upon their allies for military assistance, including a contingent from Athens. The Athenians, recognizing the potential for a power shift, sent 4,000 hoplites to aid Sparta in quelling the revolt. However, upon their arrival, the Spartans dismissed the Athenian forces, fearing that they might side with the Helots against their former allies. This decision not only strained relations between Sparta and Athens but also led to a repudiation of their alliance by the Athenians, who felt insulted and disrespected by the Spartan leadership. The dismissal of Athenian troops underscored the deep-seated mistrust that existed between the two city-states, which would later contribute to the broader conflicts of the Peloponnesian War.
