Diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran collapsed between 24/02/2026 and 26/02/2026 in Geneva, Switzerland, ending a series of talks mediated by Oman that had attempted to address disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and regional security concerns. The breakdown occurred during what had been described as a critical stage of negotiations, with Omani mediators initially reporting progress before discussions ultimately reached an impasse.
The talks focused on proposals intended to resolve disagreements over Iran’s nuclear activities and the international sanctions imposed on Tehran. According to U.S. officials, the American delegation under President Donald Trump sought a comprehensive agreement requiring the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a permanent end to uranium enrichment, and new restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program. The United States also sought expanded verification measures designed to ensure compliance with any future agreement.
Iranian officials rejected these conditions and insisted that any arrangement must allow the country to maintain uranium enrichment for civilian purposes. Tehran also opposed including its ballistic missile capabilities or regional military activities in the scope of the negotiations. Iranian negotiators indicated that they favored a return to the framework established under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear agreement that limited Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
Tensions during the talks intensified after U.S. officials cited intelligence findings that reportedly indicated the Tehran Research Reactor had enriched uranium to 20 percent purity, which they described as inconsistent with Iranian statements regarding the level of enrichment. American representatives characterized the development as a “significant credibility breach,” further complicating negotiations and widening the gap between the two sides.
By 26/02/2026, the diplomatic process had effectively collapsed. President Trump publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the discussions, stating that Iran was “not willing to give us what we have to have.” The failure of the Geneva negotiations ended the latest attempt to revive or replace previous nuclear agreements and contributed to rising tensions between the two countries in the days that followed.
