United States and Israel launched a coordinated large-scale military operation against Iran, marking the start of a new phase of armed conflict in the Middle East. The campaign was referred to as “Operation Lion’s Roar” by Israel and “Operation Epic Fury” by the United States. The offensive began in the morning hours of Iran Standard Time and involved extensive air and missile strikes on Iranian targets across multiple regions of the country.
The opening wave of attacks included hundreds of strikes on military and government facilities. According to Israeli military statements, roughly 200 fighter jets were deployed and around 500 targets were struck across Iran during the initial phase. Targets reportedly included air defense systems, missile launchers, command centers, and other military infrastructure located in Tehran and other cities. Explosions were reported in numerous locations including Isfahan, Tabriz, Bushehr, Shiraz, and other urban centers, indicating a nationwide scope to the operation.
One of the most consequential developments occurred in Tehran, where Iranian authorities later confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during the strikes. Iranian state media announced his death on 01/03/2026, after earlier reports that a strike had hit the district where the Supreme Leader’s residence and key government facilities are located. Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, was 86 years old at the time of his death. The Iranian government declared 40 days of national mourning following the announcement.
In addition to the death of Khamenei, several other senior Iranian officials and military figures were reported killed during the opening attacks. Reports indicated that dozens of high-ranking officials were targeted as part of what analysts described as a “decapitation strike” strategy aimed at Iran’s leadership and command structure. The strikes also targeted military compounds and government facilities including defense-related institutions in the capital.
Civilian casualties were also reported during the broader wave of attacks. Iranian officials and media reported that strikes in the southern city of Minab hit a girls’ elementary school, resulting in the deaths of many civilians, including children. Casualty figures varied in early reports as rescue operations continued and information from affected areas remained limited.
Following the strikes, Iran warned of retaliation and launched missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and locations associated with United States forces in the region. Governments across the Middle East placed military forces on alert, and several countries called for diplomatic efforts to reduce the risk of further escalation.
