Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery, the kingdom’s largest refining facility, was targeted in a drone attack during a period of escalating conflict linked to the 2026 Iran War. The incident occurred only days after joint United States and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28/02/2026, which triggered heightened regional tensions and security alerts across key energy infrastructure sites in the Persian Gulf.
According to Saudi authorities, two drones believed to be launched from Iranian-aligned sources approached the refinery complex located on the Persian Gulf coast in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Saudi air defense systems intercepted both drones before they could reach their intended target. Despite the interception, debris from the destroyed drones fell within the refinery area and caused a limited fire inside the facility. Emergency response teams at the site quickly contained the fire and secured the affected area.
The Ras Tanura refinery is a central component of Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure and accounts for approximately 16 percent of the country’s total refining capacity. Following the incident, Saudi Aramco announced a precautionary shutdown of the refinery’s 550,000 barrel-per-day processing operations to allow engineers and safety teams to inspect the site and evaluate any potential damage caused by the debris and fire.
Officials reported that no injuries or fatalities occurred during the incident. Saudi civil defense and industrial safety teams responded immediately after the fire started, and the situation was brought under control within a short period. Authorities stated that the temporary shutdown was a safety measure to ensure operational integrity and prevent further risk while assessments were conducted.
The attempted strike on Ras Tanura occurred amid broader regional military activity following the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and forces aligned with the United States and Israel in late February 2026. Energy facilities in the Gulf region have historically been considered strategic targets during periods of geopolitical tension because of their role in global oil supply.
