On August 1, 1966, GoldStar Co., Ltd., the predecessor of LG Electronics, manufactured South Korea's first domestically produced black-and-white television, the VD-191, marking a historic breakthrough in the country's electronics industry. Founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Koo In-hwoi, GoldStar had already pioneered the domestic production of radios, electric fans, telephones, and refrigerators. The VD-191 featured a 19-inch screen, vacuum-tube technology, and a distinctive cabinet design that could be fitted with four supporting legs. GoldStar initially manufactured approximately 500 units, introducing Korean consumers to a domestically produced alternative to imported televisions. Its production demonstrated the country's growing technological capabilities and represented a major step toward establishing a national television manufacturing industry. The introduction of the GoldStar VD-191 became a defining moment in South Korea's broadcasting, consumer electronics, and industrial history. The television helped expand access to visual entertainment, news, and educational broadcasting, transforming how Korean households experienced mass media. Demand for the new televisions was strong, and their arrival helped accelerate the growth of the domestic television market. GoldStar continued advancing television technology, beginning mass production of 19-inch color televisions in August 1977 and expanding into international television manufacturing during the following decade. In recognition of its historical and technological significance, the original VD-191 was designated a National Registered Cultural Heritage of South Korea on August 27, 2013. This pioneering achievement established a foundation for the company's television business and its eventual transformation into LG Electronics, a globally recognized manufacturer of televisions and home appliances.
