On 05/01/2016, LG Electronics introduced its LG SIGNATURE OLED G6 television at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The television formed part of LG's newly introduced SIGNATURE premium product collection, which also included home appliances designed around minimalist styling and advanced technology. The OLED G6 attracted attention for its exceptionally thin display, high-contrast picture quality, and support for emerging high dynamic range (HDR) video formats. LG presented the television as a premium home entertainment product combining OLED display engineering with a distinctive glass-backed design.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED G6 featured the company's Picture-on-Glass design, in which an approximately 2.57-millimeter-thin OLED panel was mounted onto a transparent glass backing. The television's ultra-slim construction was made possible by OLED technology, which uses self-emitting pixels and does not require the separate backlight system found in conventional LCD televisions. LG integrated the television's speakers and some electronic components into a soundbar-style base, helping maintain the thin appearance of the display.
LG introduced the G6 in 65-inch and 77-inch screen sizes, both offering 4K Ultra HD resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels. The OLED panel could independently control light output at the pixel level, allowing individual pixels to switch off completely to produce deep blacks. This capability provided high contrast and helped preserve image detail in dark scenes. OLED technology also offered wide viewing angles compared with many conventional LCD panels, supporting more consistent picture quality when viewed from different seating positions.
One of the television's principal technical features was support for high dynamic range content. The G6 supported both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, two formats designed to deliver a wider range of brightness and color information than standard dynamic range video. The television also carried the Ultra HD Premium certification introduced by the UHD Alliance, an industry organization that established performance requirements for premium 4K televisions, including resolution, color reproduction, and dynamic range.
LG's 2016 OLED television lineup included features developed to improve color performance and image processing. The company emphasized the ability of its OLED panels to reproduce deep black levels, wide color ranges, and detailed images without the backlight-related limitations of LCD technology. The G6 also incorporated LG's webOS 3.0 smart television platform, which provided access to streaming services, connected devices, and other entertainment functions through an updated user interface.
The television's audio system was developed in collaboration with Harman/Kardon, reflecting LG's effort to integrate sound quality into the overall product design. Rather than relying solely on conventional rear-mounted television speakers, the G6 used a forward-facing soundbar-style speaker arrangement within its base. The television was also designed to support wall mounting, with the base capable of folding behind the display.
CES 2016 took place from 06/01/2016 to 09/01/2016 at convention and exhibition venues across Las Vegas. LG revealed its SIGNATURE lineup during its pre-show announcements and displayed the products to industry visitors, journalists, retailers, and technology professionals throughout the event. The G6 was one of several OLED televisions introduced by LG that year as the company expanded its premium 4K display portfolio.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED G6 received recognition through the CES 2016 Innovation Awards program, including a Best of Innovation distinction in the Video Displays category. The award was associated with the television's design and display technology. LG subsequently introduced the G6 to commercial markets during 2016, positioning it within its premium television range alongside other OLED models.
