Operation Compass launched by British and Indian troops

Operation Compass was a military offensive launched by British and Indian troops of the Western Desert Force against Italian forces in Egypt. The operation targeted Italian troops that were entrenched in fortified positions, consisting of seven infantry divisions and the Maletti Group. The initial phase of the operation involved coordinated attacks on five Italian camps located around and south of Sidi Barrani. These camps were quickly overrun, leading to significant Italian losses. Notably, Italian General Pietro Maletti was killed during the conflict, which severely impacted the Italian command structure. The Maletti Group, along with the 1st Libyan Division and the 2nd Division, suffered catastrophic losses, effectively being destroyed in the course of the operation. As a result of the offensive, the remaining Italian units in Egypt were compelled to retreat towards Libya, marking a decisive victory for the British and Indian forces in the North African theater of World War II. This operation not only showcased the effectiveness of the Western Desert Force but also set the stage for subsequent military engagements in the region, altering the balance of power in North Africa at that time.
