The first World Health Assembly (WHA) convened to address global health issues and establish priorities for the newly formed World Health Organization (WHO). The assembly concluded with the approval of a budget of US$5 million for the following year, which was a significant financial commitment aimed at tackling pressing health challenges. G. Brock Chisholm, a key figure in the establishment of the WHO, was appointed as the director-general. His leadership was crucial in guiding the organization through its formative years. Andrija Štampar was elected as the first president of the assembly, marking a pivotal moment in the governance of global health initiatives. The assembly identified several critical health priorities, including the control of malaria, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted infections. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of improving maternal and child health, nutrition, and environmental hygiene, recognizing these as foundational elements for enhancing public health worldwide. The assembly's first legislative act focused on the need for accurate data collection regarding disease spread and morbidity. This initiative aimed to establish a reliable framework for monitoring health trends and informing policy decisions. The emphasis on statistical compilation underscored the importance of evidence-based approaches in public health. The decisions made during this inaugural meeting laid the groundwork for future health policies and programs, shaping the global health landscape. The WHA has since evolved into a critical platform for international health governance, facilitating collaboration among member states to address emerging health threats and promote health equity across populations.
