The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and Moderna initiated plans for a COVID-19 vaccine during a meeting at the Davos gathering, which took place in January 2020. This meeting occurred at a critical time when the COVID-19 outbreak was just beginning to escalate, with reported global cases numbering 274 and a total of 16 fatalities attributed to the virus. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the World Health Organization's declaration of a global health emergency shortly after this meeting. CEPI, backed by an initial investment of $460 million from various governments including Germany, Japan, and Norway, as well as contributions from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, aimed to accelerate the development of vaccines to combat emerging infectious diseases. The collaboration with Moderna was pivotal, as the company was already engaged in mRNA technology, which showed promise for rapid vaccine development against the novel coronavirus.
