The 2023 World Chess Championship took place from April 9 to April 30 in Astana, Kazakhstan, featuring a match between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren. Nepomniachtchi, having won the 2022 Candidates Tournament, faced Ding, who secured his spot after Magnus Carlsen opted not to defend his title. The match consisted of 14 classical games, with five decisive results and nine draws, leading to a 7–7 tie. In the subsequent rapid tiebreaks, Ding won the final game with the black pieces, clinching the title and becoming the 17th World Chess Champion. This victory marked Ding as the first Chinese male to hold the world title. The prize fund was €2 million, with Ding receiving €1.1 million and Nepomniachtchi €900,000.
