On 25/01/2002, Wikipedia completed a major technical transition by migrating from its original UseModWiki software to a new custom-built platform known internally as “Phase II.” The software was developed by Magnus Manske, a German programmer and early Wikipedia contributor, using PHP and MySQL technologies. The migration significantly improved Wikipedia’s scalability and functionality during a critical stage of the encyclopedia’s early growth. Wikipedia had originally launched in January 2001 using UseModWiki, a Perl-based wiki engine created by Clifford Adams. While suitable for Wikipedia’s earliest months, the software struggled to handle the rapidly increasing number of articles, edits, and contributors as the project expanded internationally throughout 2001. Magnus Manske developed the new “Phase II” software specifically to support Wikipedia’s growing technical demands. The platform introduced a database-driven architecture using PHP and MySQL, allowing faster page generation, improved search capabilities, better scalability, and more advanced editing features. The migration also made it easier to support multiple language editions, which were expanding quickly at the time. The software transition represented one of the first major infrastructure upgrades in Wikipedia’s history. It laid the technical foundation for the future MediaWiki platform, which would later become the core software powering Wikipedia and many other Wikimedia projects worldwide. The migration also had broader organizational consequences. Around this period in early 2002, concerns emerged within the Wikipedia community regarding possible commercialization, advertising, and ownership issues as the platform’s popularity increased. Discussions surrounding the transition contributed to stronger public commitments by Wikipedia’s leadership and contributors to maintain the encyclopedia as a non-commercial, freely accessible project. Jimmy Wales increasingly emphasized that Wikipedia would remain free from advertising and commercial editorial influence. These principles later became central to the Wikimedia Foundation’s identity after the non-profit organization was established in 2003. The commitment to non-commercialism distinguished Wikipedia from many internet companies emerging during the post-dot-com era. The “Phase II” migration also accelerated Wikipedia’s growth. The improved infrastructure allowed editors to create and manage articles more efficiently, helping the encyclopedia scale rapidly during the early 2000s as international participation expanded. Why This Moment Matters: The 2002 migration to Phase II software transformed Wikipedia from a small experimental wiki into a scalable global publishing platform. It also coincided with the strengthening of Wikipedia’s long-term identity as a non-commercial, community-driven knowledge project independent from traditional advertising-based internet business models.
