Wikimedia Launches Wikipedia Zero Initiative

In October 2011, the Wikimedia Foundation officially announced the launch of Wikipedia Zero, a mobile access initiative designed to provide free access to Wikipedia on mobile phones in developing countries. The program aimed to remove mobile data costs for users accessing Wikipedia, particularly in regions where internet affordability remained a major barrier to information access.
