On 3 April 2020, we operated a special cargo charter flight from Shanghai to London Heathrow, carrying essential medical equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the UK's National Health Service (NHS). Working with Virgin Unite, the Virgin Group's not-for-profit foundation, we arranged the flight to support healthcare workers responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flight VS251 was operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, departing Shanghai at 11:40 local time and arriving at Heathrow at 16:50 the same day. The aircraft carried more than 350,000 items, including respirators, ventilator parts, face masks, scrubs, aprons and eye protection. To maximise the amount transported, supplies were loaded into both the cargo hold and the passenger cabin.
Seven pilots and four cabin crew operated the service, with support from our cargo and ground operations teams. The flight required coordination with the British Embassy in Beijing, the UK Government and the Civil Aviation Authority, alongside assistance from Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. These arrangements helped us move urgently needed equipment into the UK while international passenger services were being severely restricted.
The charter became the first in a series of flights bringing medical supplies from China to support the NHS. By 21 April, we had transported more than 3.5 million items of PPE and medical equipment on five Shanghai flights. The operation showed how our aircraft and cargo teams could be deployed to maintain essential supply chains during the pandemic.
