On 22 June 1984, we operated our first scheduled passenger flight, departing London Gatwick Airport for Newark, New Jersey. The service was operated by a leased Boeing 747-200, named Maiden Voyager, and officially began Virgin Atlantic's transatlantic passenger operations. The inaugural flight was the culmination of months of preparation following Richard Branson's decision to enter the airline industry. With a small team and a single aircraft, we entered the competitive North Atlantic market, offering passengers an alternative to established carriers. Our approach combined competitive fares with a distinctive style of customer service, reflecting the Virgin brand's emphasis on making the travel experience more enjoyable. The Gatwick–Newark route became our first scheduled service, connecting the United Kingdom and the United States. Its launch established the operational foundations of Virgin Atlantic and introduced passengers to the airline's approach to long-haul travel.
