In 1988, we secured approval to introduce scheduled flights between London Gatwick and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), expanding our planned transatlantic network. The new route built on our existing services to Newark and Miami, strengthening our presence in the United States and providing an additional connection to the New York metropolitan area. The expansion was part of our efforts to establish Virgin Atlantic as a competitive alternative to larger, established airlines on major international routes. New York was an important market for both business and leisure travel, and serving JFK would allow us to offer passengers greater choice when flying between London and the United States. During 1988, we also made arrangements to expand our Boeing 747 fleet in preparation for additional long-haul services. The development of the JFK route reflected our growing ambitions in the North Atlantic market and the practical investment required to support a wider international network.
