In May 1992, we launched a daily scheduled service between London Gatwick and Orlando, Florida, expanding our presence in the United States and strengthening our long-haul leisure travel network. The new service built on our existing operations to Florida, including Miami, and provided a direct connection to one of America's most popular family holiday destinations.
We had already begun operating charter flights to Orlando in May 1988. The introduction of a daily scheduled service four years later established a more regular connection between London and Central Florida, making it easier for customers to plan their journeys. Orlando's theme parks, resorts and year-round leisure attractions made the destination particularly relevant to our growing holiday business.
The route also complemented Virgin Holidays, which had been offering long-haul package holidays since 1985. By combining scheduled flights with holiday packages, we could serve customers looking for convenient travel arrangements to Florida. The Orlando service strengthened our position in the leisure market and added an important destination to our expanding transatlantic network.
