On 16 May 1990, we launched scheduled flights between London Gatwick and Los Angeles International Airport, establishing our first direct connection to the American West Coast. The new service expanded Virgin Atlantic's transatlantic network, which already included destinations such as Newark, Miami and New York JFK, and provided passengers with another option for travelling between the United Kingdom and the United States. The route initially operated as a daily, non-stop service, connecting London with one of America's major centres for business, tourism and entertainment. To support the launch, we introduced a marketing campaign in Southern California that reflected Virgin Atlantic's distinctive approach to advertising and customer engagement. The campaign helped introduce our airline to travellers in a competitive market served by larger, established international carriers. The Los Angeles launch also coincided with improvements to our Upper Class offering, including the opening of an airport lounge at London Gatwick and the introduction of inflight beauty therapy. These additions formed part of our wider efforts to differentiate the passenger experience as we expanded our long-haul operations. Establishing the Los Angeles route extended our reach across the United States and strengthened our position in the transatlantic aviation market.
