On 1 July 1991, we began operations at London Heathrow Airport, expanding beyond our original base at London Gatwick. The move followed changes to UK aviation regulations that opened Heathrow to additional airline competition. Gaining access to Britain's principal international airport allowed us to operate from a major global aviation hub and compete more directly with established long-haul carriers.
Our initial Heathrow operations included services to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles and Tokyo. These were destinations already served by Virgin Atlantic from Gatwick, but operating from Heathrow gave us access to a larger international travel market and greater opportunities to attract business and leisure passengers. The move was particularly important for connecting traffic and premium travellers, for whom Heathrow's extensive international network offered practical advantages.
Securing access to Heathrow had been an important objective during our early years. Previously, restrictions on the distribution of air traffic between London's airports had limited our ability to operate from Heathrow. Their removal enabled us to strengthen our position in the long-haul market while increasing competition on routes historically dominated by larger airlines. The start of Heathrow operations became an important development in Virgin Atlantic's expansion, giving us a second London operating base and greater flexibility to develop our international services.
