In November 2016, we completed AIR4, the largest business and technology transformation programme in Virgin Atlantic's history at the time. Developed in partnership with Delta Air Lines, the project replaced our existing passenger service system with a new technology platform built on Delta's systems. The transition modernised the way we managed reservations, check-in and customer services, bringing several important operational functions onto a more integrated platform.
The changeover took place over the weekend of 12–13 November 2016, following extensive preparation involving teams across the airline. During the transition, online bookings, reservation changes and some check-in services were temporarily unavailable, with additional customer support arranged at airports and contact centres. We confirmed on 15 November that the new system had been successfully implemented without disruption to our scheduled flying programme, although some initial adjustments were still required.
AIR4 supported improvements to our website, mobile applications, airport kiosks and customer self-service facilities, giving passengers greater control over their bookings and travel arrangements. The shared technology foundation also strengthened our operational relationship with Delta, making it easier to coordinate services for passengers travelling across our transatlantic joint venture.
The completion of AIR4 was an important investment in our digital infrastructure. It replaced ageing systems with a platform designed to support future service improvements while helping our teams manage customer journeys more efficiently.
