The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle was developed as a high-performance air superiority fighter for the United States Air Force during the Cold War. Designed by McDonnell Douglas, the aircraft was intended to achieve and maintain air dominance through superior speed, maneuverability, and advanced avionics. The prototype YF-15 completed its first flight on 27/07/1972 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States. The first flight of the YF-15 was conducted by McDonnell Douglas test pilot Irving L. Burrows. The aircraft featured a twin-engine configuration powered by Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engines, enabling speeds exceeding Mach 2.5 (about 1,650 mph or 2,655 km/h). The design incorporated a large wing area and twin vertical stabilizers, providing high maneuverability and stability at both high and low speeds. The aircraft also included advanced radar and avionics systems designed for long-range detection and engagement of enemy aircraft. The F-15 Eagle entered operational service with the United States Air Force in 1976. Its primary role was air superiority, although later variants were adapted for additional missions including ground attack and strike operations. The aircraft was armed with AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM-9 Sidewinder, and later AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, as well as an internal 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon. Production of the F-15 began in the early 1970s and has continued through multiple upgraded versions. Early variants included the F-15A and F-15B, followed by the improved F-15C and F-15D models. The aircraft has been exported to several allied countries including Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. The F-15 Eagle has remained in active service for decades and has participated in multiple conflicts since the late 20th century. #F15Eagle #McDonnellDouglas #AirSuperiorityFighter #ColdWarAviation #AviationHistory
