On May 4, 1853, the Trucial States came into existence when seven tribal sheikhdoms on the southeastern Persian Gulf coastline signed the Perpetual Maritime Truce. This agreement was a renewal of the maritime truce that the sheikhdoms had with Britain since the early 19th century. The Trucial States were composed of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
Under the protection of the British Empire, the Trucial States were able to maintain stability and security in the region, facilitating trade and development. The British presence also played a significant role in navigating disputes among the sheikhdoms and with neighboring countries.
