The United Nations launched the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico, bringing together representatives from various governments, organizations, and other stakeholders. The goal of this initiative was to advance global resilience and systematically reduce disaster risk. This platform served as a critical forum for collaboration, enabling participants to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and establish policies aimed at mitigating the impacts of disasters.
One of the defining elements of this platform was its alignment with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a comprehensive framework adopted to reduce disaster risks and losses. With natural disasters causing significant economic damage and human suffering across the world, the necessity for a global approach to disaster risk management had never been more urgent. According to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), economic losses from disasters were estimated to average around $250 billion to $300 billion annually. In addition, recorded disasters had claimed more than 1.3 million lives over a 20-year period, highlighting the critical need for effective risk reduction strategies.
The Global Platform emphasized the importance of integrating risk reduction measures into national and local policies, encouraging nations to prioritize sustainable development. By facilitating dialogue and cooperation, the platform aimed to strengthen institutional capacities and promote investments in risk reduction technologies.
Stakeholders from across multiple sectors, including public, private, and civil society, participated in various sessions and workshops. Their discussions underscored the importance of community engagement, public awareness, and the role of technology in enhancing early warning systems and disaster preparedness.
