The United Nations launched the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014–2024) with the primary objective of advancing global access to modern energy. This initiative emphasized three core areas: universal access to modern energy services, improved energy efficiency, and the increased use of renewable energy sources.
The background to this initiative lies in the recognition of the critical role that energy plays in development. At the time, an estimated 1.2 billion people lacked access to electricity, and around 2.8 billion people relied on wood, charcoal, or animal waste for cooking and heating, which poses significant health and environmental risks. The UN identified that access to reliable and affordable energy could significantly contribute to the achievement of various development goals, including poverty reduction, improved public health, and enhanced educational opportunities.
The Decade of Sustainable Energy for All set ambitious targets to be met by 2030, aiming for universal access to modern energy services, doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Several strategies were put forth to achieve these targets, including mobilizing public and private investments, fostering international collaboration, and leveraging technological innovations.
The impact of this initiative extends to various dimensions of global progress. Improved access to modern energy services has the potential to foster economic growth by enabling industries to function more efficiently and increasing the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises. Energy efficiency measures can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. The promotion of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydropower, supports the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy systems globally.
Statistics from the time of the launch showed that renewable energy accounted for approximately 18% of global final energy consumption. The initiative sought to significantly increase this proportion, recognizing the environmental and economic benefits of a shift toward renewable sources.
The Decade of Sustainable Energy for All represents a concerted effort by the international community, spearheaded by the UN, to address one of the most pressing issues of contemporary times. It underscores the interconnectedness of energy access, sustainable development, and environmental sustainability.
