Idi Amin's regime came to a dramatic end when he was overthrown and forced into exile. Amin had seized power in Uganda through a military coup and ruled the country with an iron fist. His regime, marked by gross human rights abuses, caused an estimated 300,000 deaths. During his rule, Uganda experienced severe economic decline, infrastructural decay, and political instability.
Amin's regime was characterized by its brutality. He established the State Research Bureau, a notorious secret police force that committed numerous atrocities. Under his orders, people were arrested, tortured, and killed, often without trial. Ethnic groups such as the Acholi and Lango were targeted, and there was widespread persecution.
The beginning of the end for Amin started when he attempted to annex Tanzania's Kagera region. This incursion led to a swift and retaliatory response from Tanzania, leading to the Uganda–Tanzania War. Tanzanian forces, along with Ugandan exiles, spearheaded an operation to remove Amin from power. The coalition defeated Amin's forces, leading to the capture of Kampala, Uganda's capital.
Following the defeat, Amin fled to Libya before eventually settling in Saudi Arabia. His departure marked the end of nearly eight years of brutal dictatorship. The overthrow had significant repercussions for Uganda. It allowed for the establishment of a new government, though the country faced the daunting task of rebuilding after years of severe damage. The National Consultative Council was formed to lead the transitional government, tasked with restoring order and overseeing the transition to civilian rule.
The end of Amin’s regime opened the door for international aid and support, essential for the country's recovery. However, Uganda continued to experience political and social challenges, as the scars left by Amin’s rule were deep and long-lasting.
