Disney+ officially launched on 12/11/2019, marking The Walt Disney Company’s entry into the global subscription video-on-demand market. The service debuted in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands on the same day, with Australia and New Zealand following on 19/11/2019. At launch, Disney+ offered a catalog of more than 500 films and 7,500 television episodes, including content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. The platform introduced original programming alongside its library content, with “The Mandalorian,” a Star Wars series created by Jon Favreau, serving as a flagship title. Within its first 24 hours, Disney reported more than 10 million sign-ups, indicating strong initial demand. The service was priced at $6.99 per month in the United States at launch, positioning it competitively against other streaming platforms at the time. Disney+ was built as part of a broader direct-to-consumer strategy by Disney, following its acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets in 2019. The service integrated content from newly acquired studios such as 20th Century Studios and expanded its library rapidly. By early 2020, Disney+ had already surpassed 28 million subscribers, and it continued to expand internationally in phases across Europe, Asia, and Latin America throughout 2020 and 2021. The launch of Disney+ contributed to increased competition in the streaming industry, which already included established platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Disney leveraged its extensive intellectual property portfolio and brand recognition to attract a wide audience, including families and fans of established franchises. #DisneyPlus #StreamingService #Disney #TheMandalorian #EntertainmentIndustry
