In 2011, the Pentagon completed a comprehensive renovation program that had been underway since 1998. The project involved the phased reconstruction of the building's interior facilities to bring them into alignment with modern requirements for safety, workplace efficiency, and security. Major improvements included asbestos removal, updated building infrastructure, sealed office windows, and the reorganization of office space using a standardized Universal Space Plan. The renovation also changed workplace arrangements by reintroducing open office bays equipped with modern furnishings and partitions. During the renovation period, the September 11, 2001 attacks required additional reconstruction of the damaged western section through the Phoenix Project. Completion of the modernization program represented a significant development in the Pentagon's continuing use as an operational military headquarters while preserving the basic architectural structure established during World War II.
