On April 18, 1989, the Pentagon Office Building Complex received designation in the Virginia Landmarks Register, formally recognizing its historical significance within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located in Arlington County across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the building had served as a major federal military headquarters since its completion in January 1943. Its architectural characteristics, including its distinctive five-sided design and extensive administrative facilities, made it an important example of twentieth-century government construction. The designation followed the Pentagon's addition to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1988. Together, these forms of historic recognition reflected the building's importance to both Virginia's architectural landscape and the institutional history of the United States military.
