In March 1842, the brig Ann shipwrecked near Keelung Harbour, an event that had significant repercussions for the commanders of Taiwan, Dahonga and Yao Ying. Following the shipwreck, these commanders filed a report alleging an attack from the Keelung fort. This incident was part of a larger context of maritime conflicts in the region, which often involved local and foreign powers vying for control and influence. The aftermath of the shipwreck was dire; over 130 survivors from another vessel, the Nerbudda, along with 54 from the Ann, faced execution in Tainan. This action was taken despite the fact that the report filed by the commanders was later found to be false, leading to punitive measures against the officials in Taiwan who had acted on the erroneous information. The incident highlights the severe consequences of military engagements and the complexities of governance in the face of conflict.
