In response to the ongoing instability and security challenges in Somalia, the European Union initiated three operations aimed at enhancing security and supporting the political transition in the region. EUTM Somalia was established to provide training and support to the Somali National Army, focusing on building a capable and professional military force. Concurrently, the EU Naval Force Somalia Operation Atalanta was launched to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa, protecting shipping routes and ensuring maritime security. Additionally, EUCAP Nestor was created to strengthen the maritime security capacity of Somalia and neighboring countries, facilitating regional cooperation in addressing piracy and other maritime threats. These operations were part of a broader strategy aligned with the 'Roadmap for the End of Transition', which aimed to establish permanent democratic institutions in Somalia. The transitional government faced significant challenges, including the end of its interim mandate, which underscored the urgency of international support in stabilizing the country and fostering governance structures. The EU's involvement has been pivotal in providing the necessary resources and expertise to assist Somalia in its journey towards peace and stability.
