The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) was a Marxist-Leninist political party in Sri Lanka that engaged in armed insurrection against the government during the late 1980s. The conflict escalated as the JVP sought to overthrow the government, leading to widespread violence and unrest. In response, the government adopted a hardline approach to suppress the rebellion. Rather than pursuing legal proceedings or imprisonment, the authorities opted for a military solution, resulting in a significant loss of life. Estimates suggest that between 30,000 and 70,000 JVP members and sympathizers were killed during this crackdown. This brutal response marked a stark contrast to the government's earlier handling of a similar uprising in the early 1970s, where the then-Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike had chosen to implement trials and imprisonment for the rebels. The decision to use lethal force rather than judicial measures reflected a shift in government strategy and highlighted the severity of the threat posed by the JVP at that time. The aftermath of the conflict had lasting implications for Sri Lankan society, contributing to a climate of fear and repression, and shaping the political landscape for years to come.
