In the year 2000, Senegal reaffirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping by deploying a battalion to the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC). This mission aimed to stabilize the region amidst ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises. Additionally, Senegal agreed to send a US-trained battalion to Sierra Leone to support the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), which was established to help restore peace following a brutal civil war. These deployments are a continuation of Senegal's long-standing tradition of contributing to both international and regional peacekeeping efforts. The Senegalese military, comprising approximately 17,000 personnel across the army, air force, navy, and gendarmerie, benefits from training and support primarily from France and the United States, with some assistance from Germany. Notably, Senegal's military has maintained a policy of non-interference in political affairs, which has been a significant factor in the country's stability since gaining independence. Through these actions, Senegal demonstrates its dedication to fostering peace and security in conflict-affected regions.
