In 1682, following the death of Tsar Fyodor III of Russia, a power struggle arose between the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families for control of the throne. The young Peter I, also known as Peter the Great, was set to become the new Tsar alongside his half-brother Ivan V. However, their sister Sofia Alekseyevna seized the opportunity to assert her influence.
During the Streltsy Uprising in Moscow, Sofia took advantage of the chaos to name herself Regent of Russia, claiming that she was acting in the best interest of her brothers who were deemed unfit to rule due to their young age. Sofia's proclamation as regent marked a significant shift in Russian politics, as a woman had never held such a position of power before.
As regent, Sofia began to consolidate her authority by aligning herself with the Streltsy, the elite guards responsible for maintaining order in Moscow. She also sought to curb the influence of the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families, who were seen as threats to her rule.
However, Sofia's reign was not without its challenges. Peter I, who would later go on to become one of Russia's most prominent rulers, grew resentful of his sister's control. His animosity towards Sofia would eventually lead to a power struggle within the royal family.
Sofia Alekseyevna's self-proclamation as regent of Russia set the stage for a period of political instability and intrigue in the country. Her actions would have far-reaching consequences for the future of Russian politics and governance.
