Alaska Purchase and Its Historical Significance

The Alaska Purchase involved the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States for $7.2 million. This acquisition marked a significant expansion of U.S. territory, adding approximately 586,412 square miles of land. The deal was negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, who believed that acquiring Alaska would enhance American interests in the Pacific and provide access to valuable resources. Following the purchase, Russian administrators and military personnel withdrew from the territory, although some missionaries remained to serve the native populations, many of whom had converted to the Russian Orthodox faith.
