On 08/02/2007, British entrepreneur and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson officially launched Virgin Media in the United Kingdom, introducing a new telecommunications and entertainment brand offering television, broadband internet, fixed-line telephone, and mobile phone services. The launch followed the rebranding of NTL:Telewest, which had acquired Virgin Mobile UK in 2006. The new company brought these services together under the Virgin name, positioning Virgin Media as a competitor to established British telecommunications and pay-television providers, including BT and Sky.
The launch took place in London, where Branson participated in publicity activities promoting the new Virgin Media identity. The company introduced its branding with a red-and-white visual identity and a nationwide advertising campaign. The launch was accompanied by the slogan "Virgin Media: A world of more," highlighting the company's combined communications and entertainment services. Branson appeared as the public face of the new brand, although Virgin Media operated as a publicly listed company rather than a business wholly owned by him.
Virgin Media's introduction brought together the cable television and broadband operations of NTL and Telewest with Virgin Mobile's mobile telecommunications business. The merger created the first UK provider capable of offering four major communications services through a single corporate group, commonly described as a "quad-play" service. The company served millions of customers across the United Kingdom and sought to simplify access to home entertainment and communications through bundled service packages.
On 08/02/2007, the company also promoted its television and broadband offerings as part of its new commercial identity. The launch highlighted Virgin Media's on-demand television capabilities and high-speed cable broadband network, which provided an alternative to services delivered through traditional telephone lines. The company was led by chief executive Steve Burch, while Branson's role centred on the Virgin brand, its licensing arrangements, and his position as a shareholder.
The official launch established Virgin Media as the consumer-facing identity for the former NTL:Telewest operations. The rebranding was supported by a marketing campaign intended to introduce the new company to existing cable and mobile customers as well as potential subscribers. Although the corporate consolidation had occurred before February 2007, 08/02/2007 marked the public launch of Virgin Media under its unified brand in the United Kingdom.
