The first Ramada Inn opened in 1954 in Flagstaff, Arizona, establishing the beginning of Ramada's commercial hotel operations in the United States. The original property was a 60-room hotel located along historic U.S. Route 66, one of America's best-known highways connecting Chicago, Illinois, with Santa Monica, California. Flagstaff was an established stopping point for motorists travelling through northern Arizona, including visitors heading toward the Grand Canyon and other destinations in the American Southwest. The hotel's location along Route 66 placed it within the growing network of roadside accommodation serving automobile travellers during the 1950s. Ramada was founded by Marion W. Isbell and his business partners, who developed the brand around providing accessible accommodation for people travelling by road. The name "Ramada" comes from a Spanish term associated with a shaded shelter, reflecting the company's Southwestern origins. The Flagstaff property became the starting point for a hotel brand that would subsequently expand into additional American markets. The opening occurred during a period of expanding automobile ownership, highway travel, and demand for roadside lodging across the United States. Before the widespread development of nationally recognised motel chains, many roadside establishments operated independently, with facilities and service standards varying considerably between locations. Ramada entered this market with a business model focused on serving motorists through conveniently located accommodation. Its first 60-room property in Flagstaff provided the foundation for further development of the Ramada Inn concept, which later expanded through additional properties and franchising. The company grew beyond Arizona, establishing hotels in other states and eventually developing an international presence. Over subsequent decades, Ramada became associated with the broader growth of branded roadside hotels and motor inns in North America. The original Flagstaff opening remains the documented starting point of the Ramada hotel brand, connecting its early commercial history with Route 66 and the development of automobile-oriented hospitality in the United States.
