Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, attended Eton College between 1998 and 2003, completing his secondary education before choosing a military career rather than attending university. During his years at the prestigious boarding school near Windsor, Prince Harry studied alongside his older brother, Prince William, while living under intense public and media attention as a member of the British royal family.
Eton College, founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, is one of Britain’s most well known independent schools and has educated generations of aristocrats, politicians, military officers, and public figures. Prince Harry entered the school in September 1998 after attending Ludgrove School in Berkshire.
Prince Harry later openly acknowledged that he was less academically focused than Prince William. Despite this, he successfully completed his studies and obtained the qualifications required for entry into military officer training. He earned 11 GCSE qualifications during his time at Eton, although detailed subject grades were not publicly released.
In 2003, Prince Harry completed two A Level subjects. He achieved a B grade in Art and a D grade in Geography. British media widely reported the results at the time because of public interest surrounding the education of the royal family. School officials and royal aides also highlighted his participation in sports, outdoor activities, and student life during his years at Eton.
Rather than continuing to university, Prince Harry chose a different path focused on military service. After completing a gap year that included travel to Australia, Argentina, and Lesotho, he entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2005. There, he completed approximately ten months of officer training before receiving his commission into the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry in the British Army.
Prince Harry’s decision to pursue military service instead of higher education became a defining feature of his early adult life and later shaped many of his charitable and veterans related initiatives.
Why This Moment Matters
Prince Harry’s years at Eton and his later decision to attend Sandhurst marked the beginning of a transition from royal school life into military service and public responsibility. His educational path also reflected a more practical and military focused direction compared with the traditional university route often associated with senior members of the royal family.
