On 19/03/2016, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, arrived in Kathmandu for his first official visit to Nepal, beginning a five-day tour focused on community engagement, post-earthquake recovery, and his long-standing connection with Gurkha soldiers. The visit took place nearly a year after the April 2015 earthquake, which caused widespread destruction across the country. During the tour, Prince Harry visited Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site that sustained significant damage in the earthquake. While there, he observed restoration efforts and took part in traditional wood carving techniques used in rebuilding historic structures. He also met families affected by the disaster at the Byasi temporary settlement camp in Bhaktapur, where residents were continuing recovery efforts. A key part of the visit centered on his connection with the Gurkhas, with whom he served during his time in the British Army. Prince Harry traveled by helicopter to the district of Lamjung to meet Gurkha veterans and their families. In the village of Leorani, he stayed overnight with a local family and was symbolically named an honorary village headman during the visit. The tour also included a stop at Bardia National Park, where Prince Harry learned about conservation initiatives, including efforts to monitor wildlife populations such as tigers. He participated in a rafting activity and viewed camera trap systems used in conservation work. In Kathmandu, he held meetings with President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, addressing bilateral relations and recovery progress. On the final day of the official visit, Prince Harry went to Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu, where he met young patients receiving treatment for burn injuries. The tour concluded on 23/03/2016, combining official diplomatic engagements with visits to communities affected by the earthquake.
