On 25/03/2013, St. James’s Palace announced that Prince Harry would undertake a seven day official visit to the United States in May 2013, with a program centered on supporting the rehabilitation and recovery of wounded British and American service personnel. The announcement outlined a schedule of military, charitable, and public engagements designed to strengthen cooperation between organizations assisting injured veterans on both sides of the Atlantic.
According to the palace statement, the visit would include events promoting recovery programs for servicemen and women injured during military operations, particularly those returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Prince Harry, who had served in the British Army and completed operational tours in Afghanistan, had already become closely involved with charities and initiatives focused on rehabilitation and support for wounded personnel.
The tour itinerary included planned visits to Washington, D.C., Colorado, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Among the scheduled activities were meetings with injured service members, attendance at rehabilitation focused events, and participation in military related ceremonies. The program also included the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, an event organized by the United States Olympic Committee for wounded and recovering military personnel.
During the visit, Prince Harry was also expected to highlight collaboration between British and American recovery programs, including the work of organizations supporting physical rehabilitation, mental health care, and long term assistance for veterans. The announcement reflected ongoing cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States in military and veterans’ support initiatives following more than a decade of joint operations overseas.
The seven day tour officially began on 09/05/2013 and concluded on 15/05/2013, becoming Prince Harry’s first official visit to the United States since 2010.
Why This Moment Matters
The announcement marked one of Prince Harry’s earliest major international initiatives focused specifically on wounded veterans and military recovery programs. The themes highlighted during the 2013 tour later continued through projects such as the Invictus Games, which Prince Harry launched the following year in 2014.
