From 10/07/2018 to 11/07/2018, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, carried out their first official overseas visit as a married couple with a two-day trip to Dublin, Ireland. The visit was undertaken at the request of the British government and focused on reinforcing diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Ireland during the period of Brexit negotiations. During their stay, the Duke and Duchess met with key Irish leaders, including President Michael D. Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin, his official residence in Dublin, and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. These meetings formed a central part of the visit’s diplomatic agenda, reflecting ongoing engagement between the two countries at a governmental level. The itinerary also included several cultural and historical engagements across Dublin. At Croke Park, the couple were introduced to traditional Irish sports such as Gaelic football and hurling at the headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). They later visited Trinity College Dublin, where they viewed the Book of Kells, a manuscript dating back to around the 9th century. Their program continued at the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum, followed by a visit to the nearby Famine Memorial, which commemorates the Great Irish Famine of the 19th century. The visit concluded with attendance at a summer garden party hosted at the residence of the British Ambassador to Ireland. During the event, Prince Harry delivered a speech that referenced the historical relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland, acknowledging its complexity while highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen ties. This short visit marked the couple’s first official engagement abroad following their wedding on 19/05/2018 and preceded their longer international tour of the South Pacific later in October 2018.
