In June 2020, British author and royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell released Meghan and Harry: The Real Story, a book examining the circumstances surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from their roles as senior working members of the British Royal Family. The book was first published in the United Kingdom on 25/06/2020, followed by a United States release on 28/07/2020.
The publication presented a detailed narrative of events leading up to the couple’s decision to step back from royal duties earlier in 2020, a development widely referred to in media coverage as “Megxit.” Drawing on reported accounts and commentary, the book explored internal dynamics within the royal household, media relations, and public perceptions of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It also examined differences in expectations between royal traditions and the couple’s approach to public life.
Lady Colin Campbell, known for her previous works on the British monarchy, framed the book around themes of institutional structure and personal ambition, analyzing how these factors may have influenced the couple’s relationship with the royal establishment. The release occurred during a period of heightened public and media interest in the Sussexes following their relocation to North America and their transition away from official royal roles.
An expanded second edition of the book, titled Meghan and Harry: The Real Story: Persecutors or Victims, was later published on 04/04/2024. This updated version included additional material reflecting developments and public discussions that emerged after the original release.
