On 12/07/2018, it was announced that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Sir Elton John would collaborate on a new global initiative aimed at addressing HIV/AIDS. The planned project, later named the MenStar Coalition, was developed to focus on increasing HIV testing and treatment among men, a group identified as having lower engagement with health services in many regions. The announcement preceded the coalition’s official launch on 24/07/2018 at the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The MenStar Coalition brought together major global health partners, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At launch, the initiative represented more than $1.2 billion in planned funding commitments aimed at expanding HIV-related services. The coalition’s primary goal was to improve access to HIV diagnosis and treatment for men, particularly in high-prevalence regions such as sub-Saharan Africa. Programs under the initiative included community outreach and self-testing strategies designed to address barriers such as stigma and limited healthcare access. The broader objective aligned with international targets to reduce HIV transmission and work toward ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Prince Harry’s involvement reflected his continued engagement in global health initiatives, building on earlier work related to HIV awareness and support programs through organizations such as Sentebale.
