On 24/11/2018, Kensington Palace announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, would relocate from Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Estate. The statement came approximately six months after their wedding on 19/05/2018 and outlined plans for the couple to establish their new residence in Windsor.
Frogmore Cottage, a property on the grounds of Windsor Castle, was made available to the couple by Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to the move, the building had been divided into five separate staff units. Plans were put in place to renovate and convert the structure into a single-family home suited to the couple’s needs. The refurbishment, funded through the Sovereign Grant, was reported to cost approximately £2.4 million and included updates such as new infrastructure and modernized living spaces.
The relocation was linked to practical considerations, particularly the need for additional space and privacy as the couple prepared for the arrival of their first child. Their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born on 06/05/2019. Windsor, located about 25 miles west of central London, offered a quieter residential environment compared to Kensington Palace.
Although the announcement was made in November 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan officially moved into Frogmore Cottage in April 2019 following the completion of renovations. The move marked a transition in their domestic arrangements within the royal estate system, shifting from a central London residence to a more secluded home within the Windsor grounds.
