On 27/04/2020, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, officially launched HeadFIT, a 24/7 online mental health platform developed to support serving personnel in the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces. The initiative was created in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence and the Royal Foundation, alongside clinical and military experts, to provide accessible tools for maintaining mental fitness. HeadFIT was designed as a preventative resource, offering techniques and guidance to help military personnel manage stress, improve focus, and build resilience. The platform includes exercises based on cognitive behavioral approaches, mindfulness practices, and performance psychology, tailored specifically to the needs of individuals in active service. It was made available online to ensure continuous access regardless of location or operational conditions. The launch was originally scheduled for June 2020 but was brought forward to April in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which placed additional pressures on military personnel involved in national response efforts. At the time, members of the Armed Forces were supporting public health operations, logistics, and emergency services across the UK. The release of HeadFIT marked one of Prince Harry’s early public initiatives following his transition away from senior royal duties in March 2020. His involvement reflected his longstanding focus on mental health and support for the military community, building on previous work related to veterans and service personnel. Why This Moment Matters The early launch of HeadFIT during the COVID-19 period aligned mental health support with operational demands on the UK Armed Forces, providing a structured digital resource at a time of increased national pressure.
