In September 1992, Prince Harry began attending Ludgrove School in Wokingham, Berkshire, at the age of seven. He followed his older brother, Prince William, who had enrolled at the independent preparatory boarding school two years earlier. Ludgrove School, founded in 1892, is a well known preparatory boarding school for boys and has educated children from aristocratic, military, and professional families for generations. The school focuses on preparing pupils for entrance into leading British secondary schools, including Eton College. Prince Harry’s arrival at Ludgrove came during a highly public period for the British royal family. Earlier in 1992, the separation of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales, had become a major national news story. Despite the intense media attention surrounding the family, efforts were made to provide Prince Harry and Prince William with as stable and normal a school experience as possible. At Ludgrove, Prince Harry participated in academics, sports, and outdoor activities. Reports from the period described him as energetic, sociable, and enthusiastic about games and physical activities. Like his brother, he boarded at the school during term time while continuing to spend weekends and holidays with members of the royal family. Security arrangements surrounded both princes throughout their education, but school officials worked to minimize disruption and maintain ordinary routines for students. Prince Harry remained at Ludgrove until 1998, when he successfully passed the Common Entrance examinations and moved on to Eton College in Windsor. His years at Ludgrove represented the beginning of his formal boarding school education and formed an important part of his childhood before his later military career and royal public life. Why This Moment Matters Prince Harry’s time at Ludgrove introduced him to the boarding school environment that shaped much of his early education and teenage years. The school also served as the academic and social foundation leading to his later education at Eton College.
