On 06/05/2019 at 5:26 a.m., Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. He was born at the Portland Hospital in London, weighing 7 lbs 3 oz. The birth marked the arrival of the couple’s first child nearly one year after their marriage in May 2018.
Prince Harry publicly announced the news later that day, speaking to reporters outside Windsor Castle. He described the experience as “the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined,” and confirmed that both mother and baby were doing well. Unlike previous royal births, the couple chose a more private approach, delaying the first public appearance of their newborn.
On 08/05/2019, Archie was introduced to the world during a brief photo call at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle. The appearance featured Prince Harry and Meghan Markle presenting their son to the media, with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip meeting the newborn shortly afterward. The name Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was also announced on the same day.
Archie’s birth placed him seventh in the line of succession to the British throne at the time. The couple opted not to grant him a royal title at birth, in line with existing conventions for great-grandchildren of the monarch, instead using the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
