From 16/10/2018 to 31/10/2018, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, completed their first major official international tour following their wedding earlier that year. The 16-day journey covered Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, and included a total of 76 engagements focused on youth leadership, environmental initiatives, and support for veterans, particularly through the Invictus Games Sydney 2018. The tour began in Sydney, Australia, where the couple attended a reception at Admiralty House and visited landmarks including Taronga Zoo and the Sydney Opera House. A notable moment occurred when Prince Harry climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge to raise the Invictus Games flag, marking the opening of the international sporting event for wounded service personnel and veterans. During their time in Dubbo, they met farmers affected by drought conditions and visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service. In Melbourne, they engaged with youth leaders and traveled on a historic city tram. On Fraser Island, also known as K’gari, Prince Harry dedicated parts of the rainforest to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative. On 15/10/2018, Kensington Palace announced that the Duchess of Sussex was expecting the couple’s first child, news that coincided with the start of the tour and remained a central focus of media coverage. In Fiji, the couple attended a state dinner at the Grand Pacific Hotel and appeared on the hotel’s balcony, echoing Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 visit. Meghan Markle delivered a speech at the University of the South Pacific, addressing the importance of women’s access to education. The tour continued in Tonga, where the Duke and Duchess met King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipauʻu and visited Tupou College, contributing to further dedications under the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. The final leg in New Zealand included visits to Wellington, Auckland, and Rotorua. The couple participated in a traditional Māori pōwhiri welcome ceremony, visited Abel Tasman National Park, and walked through the Whakarewarewa Forest, known for its redwood trees. The tour concluded on 31/10/2018 in Rotorua, bringing to a close a series of engagements that combined diplomatic, charitable, and cultural elements across the four countries.
