In 2015, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was awarded the Sash of the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, one of Mexico’s highest honors granted to foreign nationals. The decoration is typically conferred in recognition of services that strengthen diplomatic, economic, or cultural ties between Mexico and other countries. At the time, Prince Andrew was actively engaged in international trade promotion and diplomatic representation on behalf of the United Kingdom. The Order of the Aztec Eagle has historically been awarded to foreign leaders and dignitaries who contribute to bilateral relations with Mexico. Prince Andrew’s receipt of the sash reflected his official role during that period, particularly through initiatives such as Pitch@Palace and his involvement in international business engagement. By contrast, his official status and use of titles had changed significantly by April 2026. Following his withdrawal from public duties in November 2019 and the removal of his military roles and patronages in January 2022, reports from late 2025 indicated that he had further distanced himself from royal titles and honors. In October 2025, he reportedly stated that he would “no longer use” his title or previously conferred honors, marking a shift in how he was publicly identified. Subsequent reports in February 2026 indicated that, following his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Prince Andrew began returning several foreign distinctions. Among those cited was Norway’s Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav. In addition, domestic changes were reported in late 2025, including the removal of his name from the registers of the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order by King Charles III. Internationally, New Zealand authorities also moved to cancel the Queen Elizabeth II 1990 Commemoration Medal previously awarded to him, acting on government advice. As of April 2026, he has been referred to in some reports as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, reflecting his reduced public role and the reported non-use of royal styles such as “His Royal Highness” and the title of “Prince.” These developments illustrate the contrast between his earlier recognition through international honors and the subsequent reported relinquishment of titles and distinctions. #PrinceAndrew #AztecEagle #RoyalHonours #UKMonarchy #DiplomaticRelations
