Portugal was under the authoritarian regime of Estado Novo for nearly five decades. The regime stifled freedoms, leading to discontent within the military, students, and the general population. The Carnation Revolution, a peaceful military coup, swiftly removed the authoritarian government from power. This bloodless revolution brought about significant social, political, and economic changes in Portugal.
The Carnation Revolution marked the end of the dictatorship and paved the way for a democratic government. The new leadership in Portugal was particularly keen on decolonization, granting independence to its African colonies of Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe. The independence of these colonies ended years of oppressive colonial rule.
The transition to democracy in Portugal brought about political pluralism, increased civil liberties, and improved living conditions for the Portuguese people. The newfound democracy also led to economic reforms and the country's integration into the European Economic Community, now known as the European Union.
The Carnation Revolution and ensuing events significantly impacted not only Portugal but also its former colonies. The event symbolizes a turning point in Portuguese history, representing the end of an era of authoritarian rule and the beginning of a new democratic chapter, emphasizing freedom, self-determination, and progress.
