Portugal’s 2026 presidential election concluded on February 8, 2026, with Socialist Party (PS) candidate António José Seguro elected President of Portugal after winning the second-round runoff against André Ventura, leader of the far-right party Chega.
With most votes counted, Seguro secured about two-thirds of the vote-reported at 66.82% (3,482,481 votes)-while Ventura received 33.18% (1,729,381 votes). Reporting on election night described the outcome as a clear win for Seguro, while noting that Ventura’s share represented an unusually high result for a far-right challenger in a Portuguese presidential race.
The runoff followed a first round on January 18, 2026, held under Portugal’s two-round system when no candidate reaches an absolute majority. Turnout in the second round was reported at about 50%. While Portugal’s presidency is largely ceremonial, it includes constitutional powers such as vetoing legislation and dissolving parliament under defined conditions-factors that kept the contest closely watched beyond party politics.
